Munchies can be good!

The best way to avoid eating fatty, salty, heart-clogging snacks is to STOP BUYING THEM.  If they are in your pantry, you'll eat them.  Usually, we get a glimpse of our badonkadonk in the mirror and decide to go on some unrealistic diet - then we cut out all of our snacking.  That is not logical because you get hungry between meals or sometimes just want to eat something!  It doesn't work, so we always go back to our old routines eventually.

Ideally, we should be eating 4-5 times a day (small meals and / or snacks) - this way we curb hunger and don't eat until we stuff ourselves.  The key is to change what you snack on!  Here are a list of some of my favorites.  Feel free to comment and leave your favorites!

FROZEN FRUIT

We especially love frozen grapes and blueberries.  Frozen blueberries are my all-time favorite snack.  I love them so much I'm about to buy 12 bushes for EDIBLE LANDSCAPING in my yard because they are so darn expensive.

FRUIT - STRAIGHT UP
I take the time to wash the fruit and put it in small tupperware containers in the fridge so they are easy to grab (INSTEAD OF CHIPS) and scarf down while I'm watching tv or working.  You will be surprised how much this helps when you go to the kitchen because you just want a lil' somethin' somethin'.

NUTS
Nuts are packed full of protein and are a good source of healthy fats, not to mention all the vitamins (including antioxidants) and minerals they contain. I used to avoid nuts because I thought they were full of fat.  I was so wrong - the fat contained in nuts is mostly the healthiest monounsaturated type and they are low in artery-clogging saturated fats.

DRIED GOJI BERRIES
Goji berries are shriveled red berries that look like red raisins that grow on an evergreen shrub found in the Himalayas.  I especially love dark chocolate covered goji berries.  Read more about them here:  http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/goji-berry1.htm

WHOLE GRAIN ENGLISH MUFFIN WITH ALMOND BUTTER
You can also use peanut butter, but be sure to check the ingredients.  It should NOT have a bunch of ingredients.  I buy freshly ground almond butter from whole foods - and it's just crushed almonds and oh so good.  Also, make sure your english muffins don't contain high fructose corn syrup.

RAISINS
You can now buy raisins in a pouch.  The pouch brings a whole 'nother level of freshness to this delicious snack.

BANANA POPSICLES

3 bananas
6 Popsicle sticks
1/4 cup natural almond butter (yeah you can use peanut butter)
1/4 cup chopped peanuts or walnuts, or granola

Peel the bananas. Cut them in half, widthwise, and push a Popsicle stick through the cut end of each half. Spread peanut butter on the bananas, and then roll them in the nuts or granola. Wrap them in waxed paper and freeze for three hours.

PROTEIN BAR
I used to turn my nose up to these, but man-o-man I just didn't try the right ones.  You can find a huge variety at whole foods - buy a few to try.  My favorite at this moment - MOJO PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_mojo_dipped/

HAPPY SNACKING!
